General Questions

  • Who should take supplements?

Anyone who is interested in their skin health and overall health should consider taking supplements to ensure their body is getting all the nutrients they need. Additionally, for individuals with specific skin concerns, our team have developed targeted solutions for problem skin, dry skin, ageing skin and more.
  • Can I take too many supplements?

Firstly, is important to note that you should not be taking supplements to replace a balanced diet. Secondly, it is possible to consume too many supplements, especially if you are combining different brands. The risk is that you may be getting too much of certain vitamins and minerals. The Advanced Nutrition Programme™ range has been specifically formulated to work in synergy so you can take products together safely. If you are taking other food supplements and have specific queries, please feel free to contact our in-house customer services and nutrition team who will endeavour to advise you.
  • Is it ok to take different supplements at the same time?

Yes, absolutely. Combining supplements will not interfere with the way they work, and, in some cases, it can even be beneficial as vitamins and minerals often rely on each other to work properly. This is also why it can be good to take a multivitamin and beneficial bacteria as a foundation, before adding other supplements. Please make sure you are taking food supplements with a main meal and not on an empty stomach.
  • When is the right time of day to take a food supplement?

In general, it is best to take most supplements with food as this is the way nature intended us to digest and absorb nutrients. We recommend that you take supplements with lunch or dinner, as this allows for better absorption. Sometimes it can be hard to get into a daily routine when taking supplements, so here are some tips that may help: 1. Set a daily reminder on your phone. 2. Keep your supplements in a drawer at work or on your desk so they are easily accessible. 3. Use one of our Advanced Nutrition Programme™ travel tins to make sure you always have your daily supply with you. 4. Consider our Skin Boxes such as Skin Ultimate which has convenient daily, tear-off pods which act as your daily supplement dose.
  • What supplements will be right for me?

All our products are searchable on our website by skin concern and there is a short skin consultation to guide you in the right direction. If you are still unsure, please contact us for personalised advice.
  • What products are safe to use during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is undoubtedly a wonderful phase in a woman's life, but it can also be demanding and fulfilling nutritional needs during this period can pose quite a challenge. While the following products are considered safe for pregnancy, we recommend that Advanced Nutrition Programme™ products not be used during this time. Instead, we advise women to switch to a brand that has been specifically formulated to cater to the needs of both the mother and baby during pregnancy, post-birth, and breastfeeding. Skin Omegas+ / Omega 3 / Skin Vit C / Digest Pro / Vitamin C Plus / Glutamine powder / Skin Vitality / Skin Youth Biome / Skin Clear Biome
  • How long do I take a supplement before deciding if it works or not?

This is a complex question and can involve many factors that affect the outcome. To simplify, every person is unique so results will vary from person to person. Usually, we find that people start to notice a difference around 12 weeks (based on in-house studies carried out in our Skin Research Centre). Some supplements may work faster, for example with our Skin Omegas+ and Skin Youth Biome™ individuals have noticed a result within 7 days. In contrast, our Skin Accumax™ achieves optimal results after a minimum period of 14 weeks. Skin cells in the epidermis turn over every 28 days so you may not notice a difference in your skin immediately, but you may notice improvements in wellbeing and energy first.
  • Is it ok to take supplements one day but not the next?

For the best results, we recommend that you take your supplements on a daily basis. If you forget to take your supplements for one day, continue to take them again the next day. There is no need to double up.
  • Is it safe for children to take Advanced Nutrition Programme supplements?

Our range of supplements have been designed for individuals aged 16 years and over who have specific skin concerns.
  • Are your supplements suitable for vegans?

The following products are suitable: Skin Accumax / Skin Antioxidant 60 / Skin Collagen Support 60 / Skin Vit C 60 / Skin Pure / Skin Vitality / Digest Pro / Glutamine Powder / Metabolic Support / Nail Science / Vitamin C Plus / Skin Collagen Synergy / Skin Even IQ
  • Are your supplements suitable for vegetarians?

The following products are suitable: Skin Accumax / Skin Youth Biome / Skin Clear Biome / Skin Vit A+ / Skin Even IQ / Skin Antioxidant / Skin Complete / Skin Collagen Support / Skin Vit C / Skin Vitality / Colostrum-C / Immunity Intelligence / Skin Pure / Digest Pro / Glutamine Powder / Metabolic Support / Nail Science / Probiotic powder / Vitamin C Plus / Skin Collagen Synergy
  • Do you test on animals?

No, we do not test on animals.
  • I have trouble swallowing tablets and capsules, what do I do?

Supplements are generally available as capsules, soft gels or tablets. For capsules, our experts recommend that you can break these apart and mix the powder into a yoghurt or water. Just remember to consume the mixture straight away as the capsule is designed to protect the ingredients from light and air – once this is removed, the nutrients will start to degrade. Tablets can be broken in half, or even crushed into a powder and mixed into food.
  • I feel nauseous after taking supplements, what should I do?

This can be perfectly normal if you are taking supplements on an empty stomach or with a light meal for instance a slice of toast. Make sure you are taking supplements with a main meal that contains some oil or fat for better absorption.
  • Why should I take supplements?

In an ideal world, we would get all our nutrients from food but sadly, this can be challenging. Due to changes in the farming, storage and processing of food, its nutritional content has diminished. An analysis by the UK Department of Agriculture reveals that the amount of magnesium in vegetables has dropped by 24% in just the past 70 years. Calcium has dropped by 27%. The iron in meat has fallen by 54%. Selenium (a key antioxidant) in fresh food is down by 50%. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey carried out in Great Britain on behalf of the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health reveals that a considerable percentage of women aged 19-64 are not getting the recommended daily amount of many vitamins and minerals and 59% do not get the recommended amount of vitamin A.
  • What does NRV on the product label mean?

There are many abbreviations in the world of nutrition and food supplements so it can be hard to understand the labelling. The abbreviation RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) has been commonly used on food supplement labels, but this term has been replaced with NRV, which is an abbreviation of ‘Nutrient Reference Value’. 13 vitamins and 14 minerals have NRVs for the purposes of food labelling – these are EU guidance levels on the daily amount of a vitamin or mineral that the average healthy person needs to prevent deficiency. Food supplement labels list the ingredients included in the product and give the proportion of the NRV value (% NRV) that is contained within the supplement for example vitamin C, 80mg, 100% NRV.
  • Do I need to worry if the NRV value is over a 100%?

No, the NRV is just an average guidance level. When formulating our products, we adhere to a stringent set of rules for safe amounts of nutrients that is provided by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). Our product labels are also reviewed by the HFMA (Health Food Manufacturers’ Association) to make sure we fall within the EU legislation and our experienced team ensure alignment with legislation in other countries worldwide
  • Can supplements interact with prescribed medications?

Yes, they can. If you are on any prescribed medications, please check with your doctor or healthcare professional to see if the specific supplement you are interested in can be taken alongside your medication.
  • Are there any differences between food supplements and medications?

Yes, Advanced Nutrition Programme™ food supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Medications are specifically designed to treat diseases and are prescribed by doctors and pharmacists.
  • Can I trust the health claims made on the product label?

Yes, you can. All of the claims that we make on our products are authorised EFSA claims. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is responsible for evaluating the scientific evidence supporting health claims.
  • How do I know that the ingredients listed on the label are actually in the product?

Quality is key pillar of the Advanced Nutrition Programme™. As a result of this, we meticulously triple test every batch produced to make sure that our customers are getting exactly what it says on the label. For more information about our quality procedures, please visit our Brand Story section.
  • How can I tell that I’m getting a good quality food supplement?

As with most things in life, quality comes with a cost. The cheapest supplements are usually less expensive for a reason due to ingredient selection, potency and testing. In general, cheaper forms of nutrients may not be easily absorbed, or lower amounts are used. Many unnecessary bulking agents and excipients may be added. Testing each batch to ensure that the right levels of nutrients are in each capsule is an enormously expensive process and will affect the price. We encourage individuals to seek information on sustainability standards of manufacturers which showcases a dedication to the health of our planet. For more information about our quality procedures please visit our Brand Story section.
  • Are all food supplements tested to make sure they are effective?

No, this is not an industry requirement. The team at Advanced Nutrition Programme™ engage in strict testing procedures which exceeds industry requirements – more information can be found on our Brand Story section. Our team also complete case studies to showcase results on various skin parameters – visit our Skin Research section to discover the full details and results.
  • Is there any research that demonstrates that taking oral supplements for skincare has benefits over traditional topical application such as moisturizers?

Research from the British Journal of Nutrition in 2006 concluded that taking oral supplements has many benefits over topical application. It supported the importance of supplements that feed skin over the entire body, in an easily absorbable form which can nourish even the deeper layers of the skin. As a general rule of thumb, the team support a 360-degree skincare programme which combines supplements with high quality professional treatments and topical products.
  • How is combining supplements with topical skincare more effective than using topical treatments alone?

A report from the British Journal of Nutrition (2006) reported that taking supplements has advantages over applying creams for skin health: nutrients are more absorbable, nutrients reach skin cells all over the body, and nourish even the deepest layers of skin. We encourage a 360-degree approach to skincare by combining supplements and a healthy diet with high quality treatments and topical skincare.
  • How are the nutrients guaranteed to reach the skin and not go to organs first?

Your body will always prioritise nutrients to go to the organs that keep you alive such as your heart and brain. That said, studies have shown that it can take as little as 12 hours for vitamins to appear in the epidermis, while others can take longer than 21 days. When it comes to developing Advanced Nutrition Programme™ products, our team select nutrients that have an affinity for skin such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, vitamin A and D, omega-3 and 6, plant extracts and many others.  All our product combinations are based on research from independent clinical studies and our own internal Skin Research Centre studies to make sure that we are having a beneficial impact on the skin.
  • How do I know I am absorbing supplements?

Our capsules are guaranteed to dissolve in the stomach within 30 minutes, although we know that they often dissolve within 2 to 11 minutes. This means that the contents of the nutrients in the capsules are released into the stomach within minutes of swallowing. We know that the best way to get the most from your supplements to take them with a main meal.
  • Is it safe to take vitamin A?

Vitamin A is a nutrient of massive importance for general health and for skin health and has been the subject of much discussion. The Advanced Nutrition Programme has assembled the research and opinions from the most respected international scientific organisations including The Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals (UK) and the European Food Safety Authority when formulating our vitamin A supplements. Our Skin Vit A+ contains 1500 micrograms of vitamin A, which is within industry recommended safety limits while still being at a level suitable to support skin health.  Pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should discuss the use of vitamin A supplements with their doctor or ante-natal clinic.
  • What are antioxidants and what are the benefits of taking supplements containing them?

Antioxidants are special nutrients that protect us from harmful toxins called oxidants or free radicals, which damage cells, accelerate ageing and cause disease. These by-products of oxygen are like the ‘sparks’ that emanate from anything that’s burnt, including cigarettes, petrol and fried or barbecued food. Even the process we use to ‘burn’ food for energy inside of our body’s cells ends up making a bucketful of oxidants every year. Antioxidants are like fireproof gloves, catching the sparks and protecting us. Each antioxidant becomes ‘hot’ and passes the oxidant to another until there is no more danger – so they work cooperatively. The key players are vitamin E (seeds, nuts, and fish); vitamin C (fruits and vegetables); vitamin A and beta-carotene (orange or red foods); glutathione (onions and garlic), and anthocyanidins (berries and beetroot). You can top these up with an all-round antioxidant supplement that contains each of the above.

  • Where do you source your bacteria strains from and where are they cultivated?

Our strains are sourced and cultivated from a specialist probiotic manufacturer. This company has been producing strains since 1923 and is one of the top innovators in research and production of the microbiome.

Skin Clear Biome™

  • Why did you choose these bacterial strains in Skin Clear Biome™?

We were looking at strains that addressed the different factors contributing to problem skin such as increased sebum, hyperkeratinisation, stress, and inflammation. We also wanted to support gut health, as this is integral to healthy skin.
  • Can I take Skin Youth Biome and Skin Clear Biome™ together?

While both formulas feature skin-friendly bacteria, they are distinctly different formulas. Skin Youth Biome fuses together four different bacteria strains with vitamin C. Yes, you can and our skin researchers encourage using both biome supplements together to promote a healthy, diverse microbiome. Alternatively, you can also alternate – taking Skin Clear Biome™ one month and then Skin Youth Biome™ the next month. Diversity is key when it comes to different types of bacteria.
  • Which products are best to use alongside Skin Clear Biome™ to help with my problem skin?

We recommend combining Skin Clear Biome™ with Skin Accumax™ and Skin Vitality for the best results.
  • Should I use Skin Clear Biome™ instead of Skin Accumax™?

Skin Clear Biome™ is not a replacement for Skin Accumax™, it has been designed to work with Skin Accumax™. If you have problem skin, then it is best to start with Skin Accumax™ and then combine it with Skin Clear Biome™ and our Skin Vitality.
  • How long can I take Skin Clear Biome™ for?

There are no time limits for taking a probiotic – you can take Skin Clear Biome™ indefinitely. The more diversity of strains that you have, the better it will be for your skin and your health, so you can also alternate between taking Skin Clear Biome™ and Skin Youth Biome™.
  • How does taking Skin Clear Biome™ compare to eating live yoghurt?

Most yoghurt undergoes a pasteurisation process which kills off the bacteria, so bacteria must be added back in. The amount in yoghurt will never match the 5 billion we have in a capsule. You should absolutely include fermented foods in your diet alongside taking the Skin Clear Biome™, again it comes back to diversity – the more different types of strains that you can have, the better.
  • If I am on medication, can I take Skin Clear Biome™?

When using any medication – topical or oral – please consult your GP before taking Skin Clear Biome™.
  • Where do you source the bacterial strains from and where are they cultivated?

Our strains are sourced and cultivated from a specialist probiotic manufacturer. This company has been producing strains since 1923 and is one of the top innovators in the research and production of the microbiome.
  • What is the difference between Skin Youth Biome™and Skin Clear Biome™?

While both formulas feature skin-friendly bacteria, they are distinctly different formulas. Skin Youth Biome fuses together four different bacteria strains with vitamin C. Inspired by the results of Skin Youth Biome, our team embarked on a project to look at the underlying factors causing problem and stressed skin. The result is our patent-pending Skin Clear Biome™ formula with four new bacterial strains (lactobacillus paracasei, lactobacillus helveticus, bifidobacterium bifidum, saccharomyces boullardii) and zinc. Remember: diversity is at the core of beneficial bacteria, so our Head of Nutrition recommends using both Skin Clear Biome™ and Skin Youth Biome together.
  • Are the bacteria strains in Skin Clear Biome™ different to the ones in Skin Youth Biome™?

Yes they are different, the strains in the Skin Clear Biome are: - Lactobacillus paracasei, Lafti® L26 AF - Bifidobacterium bifidum, Rosell®-71 (R0071) - Lactobacillus helveticus, Lafti® L10 ND - Saccharomyces boulardii We have also added zinc to this formulation to support immunity and wound healing.
  • Why do the ingredients include soy and dairy?

Dairy and soya are used in the manufacturing process – the bacteria use these as food during the growing process. Although our products go through a filtration process several times, small traces of milk proteins and soya may remain, making the product unsuitable for those with soya or severe milk protein allergies. It is however, suitable for those with a lactose intolerance.
  • Why have you used 5 billion CFUs and is that enough bacteria since other products have much higher doses in the 20 billion range?

Bacterial strains are very sensitive to several environmental factors and when you see products that have over the 20 billion CFUs (Colony Forming Units), it is often because they are accounting for some bacteria dying off. Many products do not guarantee a certain number by the end of the best before date – instead, you will most often see that the label states ‘20 billion at time of manufacture.’ We promote 5 billion CFUs by the end of the best before date and can guarantee this due to our superior manufacturing process, combined with the nitrogen flushing of the pod that the capsules are housed in. Additionally, research states that it is not the amount that matters, but the actual combination of strains and their specific properties.
  • Is Skin Clear Biome™ OK to take when trying to get pregnant or while pregnant?

There are no contraindications with Skin Clear Biome™ and pregnancy. If there are any contraindications or warnings that this will be listed on the label.
  • I’ve started taking Skin Clear Biome™ and I’m experiencing some bloating and stomach pains. What has caused this reaction?

When someone has an imbalance of bad to good bacteria in their gut, they can sometimes experience a ‘die off’ effect - especially when taking a good-quality probiotic. This means that the good bacteria are battling it out with the bad bacteria, can create some extra gas and stomach pain. This is actually a good sign because it means that the microbiome is rebalancing itself! If you experience this, the general rule of thumb is to taking things slowly. Keep taking the Skin Clear Biome™ but take one every other day. If this is well tolerated, then slowly increase until you reach the recommended dosage of one per day.
  • Do I need to put Skin Clear Biome™ in the fridge?

No, there is no need to refrigerate Skin Clear Biome™. Our product is produced in a very specific way that enables it to be stored on the shelf, in your bag, or on your desk at work. Please do note the label storage instructions – store below 25 ⁰C, in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
  • When is the best time of day to take Skin Clear Biome™

You can take Skin Clear Biome™ at any time of the day. It is best to take it with a meal so that the food can act as a buffer, further protecting the probiotics from stomach acid. Do not mix it into a hot drink like coffee or tea as this will destroy the bacteria.
  • Will stomach acid destroy the live bacteria?

No. Our strains have been specifically researched and we have included ones that have been shown to survive the transit through the stomach.
  • Is Skin Clear Biome™ suitable for vegans and vegetarians?

Skin Youth Biome™ is suitable for vegetarians. This is not a vegan product because it may contain traces of dairy.

Skin Youth Biome

  • Why did you choose the specific bacterial strains that are in Skin Youth Biome™?

We looked at strains that address the different factors that contribute to the seven signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, dullness, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone and thinning skin. Skin Youth Biome™ capsules fortify the skin's natural defences.
  • Does that mean that the live strains in it reach the skin and balance the skin’s microbiome and therefore its immune system?

This is an excellent question! The live strains do not go directly to your skin – all probiotics work in and on the gut. Probiotic bacteria are amazing little chemical manufacturing plants – they break down dietary fibres and convert them into a wide range of compounds, collectively referred to as metabolites. It is these metabolites that have a health impact in the body. Various strains produce different metabolites and therefore different effects. Skin Youth Biome™ is specifically formulated with strains whose metabolites have shown beneficial effects for the skin.

No. The amount of vitamin A contained in two soft gels (the recommended daily amount) is 400 IU’s (International Units) or 120 µg (micrograms). This level is well within the Nutrient Reference Value for the UK. There are no toxicity concerns with regards to this level of vitamin A.
  • Are Skin Omegas+ safe to take during pregnancy?

Yes they are. It is always a good idea to inform your midwife or medical advisor of any food supplements that you are taking during your pregnancy.

Our goal as skin researchers is to make ‘healthy’ collagen. There are a variety of nutrients which support the body to make skin collagen from the collagen we consume in the form of protein from our diet. When you eat or drink collagen from any protein source it just breaks down into the basic building blocks that the body needs called “amino acids”. These components need to be reassembled to supply the body structures including muscles, joints and skin. For the amino acids to be reassembled into collagen, the body uses co factor vitamins, in particular vitamins A and C. These vitamins help us to make ‘healthy’ collagen from amino acids. Typically, we do eat enough protein in our diets to provide amino acids but sometimes we may not have enough of the co-factors to help convert them.
  • Is Skin Collagen Support suitable for vegans?

The fish gelatine for the capsule is extracted from Swai and Tilapia skin from farmed fish.
  • Does Skin Collagen Support feature any sugars or artificial flavourings?

No, Skin Collagen Support does not feature any of these ingredients. The ingredients are meticulously screened by our skin researchers and are both clean and pure with no artificial colours or preservatives. It is important to review the ingredients list of collagen supplements e.g.: collagen drinks as many contain hidden sugars or artificial sweeteners.

  • There are various supplements in these pods - can I take too many supplements?

First of all, it is important to note that you should not be using supplements to replace a varied and balanced diet. Secondly, it is possible to consume too many supplements, especially if you are combining different brands. The risk here is that you may be getting too much of certain vitamins and minerals. Advanced Nutrition Programme™ has been specifically formulated to work in synergy so you can take a few products together and it is perfectly safe – in fact our skin researchers have developed these Skin Ultimate to bring together various supplements in convenient, daily dose pods.
  • Is it ok to take different supplements at the same time?

Yes absolutely, combining supplements will not interfere with the way they work, in some cases it can even be beneficial as vitamins and minerals often rely on each other to work properly.. Please make sure you are taking food supplements with a main meal and not on an empty stomach.
  • When is the right time of day to take a food supplement?

In general, it is best to take most supplements with food as this is the way nature intended us to digest and absorb nutrients. We recommend that you take supplements with a main meal as this provides for better absorption. This can be lunch or dinner. The important part is that you take your supplements on a daily basis. Sometimes it can be hard to get into a routine with this so here are some tips that may help get you in a routine: Set a daily reminder on your phone. Keep your supplements in a draw at work or on your desk so they are easily accessible. Consider our Skin Boxes such as Skin Ultimate. which has convenient daily, tear-off pods which act as your daily supplement dose.
  • What happens if I forget to take them?

Just continue taking the recommended daily dose as normal. There is no need to compensate for missed capsules. It’s okay to take all of your capsules in the evening if you forget in the morning.

  • I am using a topical vitamin A serum – would you recommend Skin Vit A+ to add as internal skincare?

Skin Vit A+ is a great foundation supplement and would complement all the topical work of your topical product. The skin is a two-sided organ so by targeting the outside with topical, we are only addressing 50% of our skin.
